If you're anything like me, and let's hope that you are, you are always on the lookout for a book featuring a badass babe protagonist. Unfortunately, these are often few and far between, and when you find one, you hold on to it tight, like Hermione to her unruly Crookshanks.
Well, I have some good news for you. I not only have one such book for you.
I have three.
The Paradox Series by Rachel Bach (@rachel_aaron on Twitter) is a sci-fi series that follows mercenary Deviana Morris as she takes a deadly security job on one of the universe's most dangerous ships. Devi's dream is to become a Devastator, the most elite type of soldier in the galaxy, and she knows that taking a position on The Glorious Fool is a sure-fire way to get there.
She just needs to survive the trip.
Devi soon starts to discover that The Fool might not just be an incredibly unlucky ship. And... is there a conspiracy afoot?
The Paradox Series is a perfect mix of adventure, sci-fi, mystery, feminism, hilarity, and heartbreak. Without giving too much away, as that would be disservice to anyone picking the book up for the first time with clear eyes, just imagine that Mass Effect was a book series that involves lizard-like aliens, forbidden romance, deceit and plasma guns.
I barreled through these books in no time flat. I haven't been this invested in a series in a very long time. Devi is the consummate female feminist protagonist. She is completely full-realized, has no time for anyone's bullshit, but is also vulnerable, fiercely intelligent, stubborn, feisty, confident... the list goes on. That's what's so impressive about these books. Devi, and her fellow characters, all feel real. Even though they're fighting aliens and they're in space wearing impenetrable armor, these people feel like they could exist.
The first book in the series is Fortune's Pawn, then Honor's Knight, finishing with Heaven's Queen. Buy them wherever books are sold!
