I don't read a lot of comic books/graphic novels/etc, but I recently read the first two volumes of Lumberjanes and they were AMAZING.
Lumberjanes follows the adventures of five girls - Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley - as they fight three eyed monsters and make friendship bracelets at Miss Qiunzilla Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's camp for hard-core lady-types. Supervised by the much put-upon counsellor Jen and occasionally backed by their badass camp director Rosie, the girls get into all sorts of mischief while still trying to stick to the Lumberjanes pledge.
Written by Noelle Stevenson (who wrote the fabulous Nimona and has also done work on Adventure Time) and Grace Ellis, with adorable illustrations by Brooke Allen., Lumberjanes is fun, fresh, and utterly charming. The girls have distinct personalities that make it easy to fall for them (feisty red-head April is my favourite), plus the supporting cast is pretty diverse, even if they don't have a lot of screen time. The second volume sees the introduction of Greek mythology which was unexpected but awesome.
As an Adventure Time fan, this is the perfect comic for me. The girls frequently yell stuff like "What the junk?" and "holy bell hooks", and their whimsical adventures wouldn't be out of place in the land of Ooo. I actually borrowed the volumes from my nine year old niece who raved about them which proves that they can appeal to different ages, and the girls are strong female role models (even if they do resort to violence from time to time...but only when it's necessary).
