Maybe It's Not Our Weekend, But It's Gonna Be Our Year

Happy New Year!

We're a couple of days into 2016 and we're feelin' pretty good. Nevertheless, it doesn't hurt to make a couple of resolutions, so here's how we're going to be our best selves this year.

Apart from my usual resolutions - to stop biting my nails (I've been making this a resolution for about 12 years, which should indicate how poorly it's going) and to lose weight - I've also come up with five other resolutions. 

1) Read more classics

There are a lot of classics I've never read, and this year, I'm going to try to tackle at least a few of them. I have a gorgeous set of Anne of Green Gables books (the ones pictured above), but I've only read the first one, so maybe I'll start there!

2) Watch more movies

A couple of years ago, I bought a collection of Audrey Hepburn movies, and I STILL haven't watched them! I want to watch more classics, whether it's Breakfast at Tiffany's or any of the Star Wars installments. 

3) Listen to more Canadian bands

Apart from Seaway and the occasional Simple Plan song, I don't listen to that many Canadian bands. I feel like I should support some more local musicians. 

4) Finish a manuscript

Any of my works-in-progress: my gay detective series. My original YA urban fantasy trilogy. The Phantom of the Opera retelling that I've been trying to map out for the past month. ANYTHING. 

5) Query agents

Well, I'd have to finish a manuscript to do this, so I guess it's conditional on my keeping the previous resolution, but it's nice to have a goal to shoot for.

1) Read more news

I can pride myself on keeping up with popular culture but I can't say the same about current affairs. One of my goals this year is to be able to actually hold a conversation about what's going on in the world and I'm hoping to achieve that through reading the Globe and the New York Times.  

2) Put things away immediately

I have a bad habit of not really maintaining my place to the standard of living I'd actually like to achieve. One way of doing that would be to do things immediately before the pile up, like dishes, folding laundry, and bed making.  

3) Consume more culture (and keep better track of all the pop culture I'm consuming)

I waste a lot of time online doing fuck-all and I'd like to use that time a little more wisely, like watching more movies, reading more books and exploring new cultural avenues of interest. 

4) Start treating my body like its the only one I have

I know, I know, total cliche writing about wanting to get more in shape and be healthier for the new year but I'm sick of treating my body like its a garbage can. It's not fair to me and I know that I can do better. One way is to stop using food as a method of reward.  

5) Be more grateful

On the whole, I'm a pretty grateful person but I could stand to be a little more appreciative of my life and all that I have. That's something I really want to work on for the new year.
