If you grew up watching anything Muppet related (the original Muppet Show, the movies, including one of the best cinematic masterpieces aka Muppet Treasure Island), then I don't know why you wouldn't give this new mockumentary series a try.
Rather than the traditional skits and sketches of the classic Muppet Show, this new version gives us more of a behind-the-scenes look into the Muppets' every day lives as they work on Miss Piggy's talk show, "Up Late with Miss Piggy". From the writers' room to the moment the show goes live on air, the Muppets are kept busy trying to juggle work and their own lives, not to mention a host of musical guest stars (including an epic Dave Grohl cameo).
Personally, I find the show hilarious. Some people might find the content too "grown up" to be handled by our furry friends, but there's nothing overly crass about it; there's some innuendo here and there but for the most part, the dialogue is sharp and clever. And sure, maybe the Muppets like to drink, but when the pub is owned by a dog (Rowlf!), wouldn't you want to go there every night too?
Whether it's Gonzo chickening out of a stunt or Miss Piggy and Kermit's somewhat messy breakup, the Muppets' antics are oddly relatable as they try to fall back to their old ways and realize they can no longer make it work the way they used to. They also manage to stay relevant by approaching "real issues" in a fun but effective way, like the #UnveiltheTail episode when, after Miss Piggy suffers a wardrobe malfunction, the show takes the opportunity to promote positive body imagery and self-love.
The humour might not be to everyone's taste, but if you're looking to revisit some of your favourite childhood characters in a more grown-up way, look no longer. Let's just hope that The Muppets is renewed for another season!
